Born in New York in 1845 and raised near St. Charles, Minn., Boyd enlisted in the 6th Minnesota Regiment in the spring of 1862, was wounded in the Battle of Birch Coulee, and was discharged in 1863. Helen Brenner Spink was born July 12, 1901 in Slayton, Minnesota, the eldest of two children born to John Henry Spink (1874-1947) and Lillian E. (Brenner) Spink (1877-1968).
